MATERIALS & PROCEDURES

MATERIALS

  • This is a list of the materials and supplies required to carry out your investigation.
  • It is written as a bulleted or numbered list.
  • The materials list does not include the supplies needed to decorate the display board.

PROCEDURE

  1. In the procedure section, you will write a numbered step by step "recipe" for your experiment.
  2. It must be detailed and include times, amounts, and exact quantities so that anyone can replicate your investigation exactly as you did it.
  3. For your investigation, you should plan to repeat your procedure at least 3 times.
  4. If you are working with plants, you should have at least 3 plants in each variable group.
  5. If your project involves a survey, you don't have to ask three times but you should interview a sufficient number of people to ensure your results are reliable.
  6. When listing your steps always begin with a verb.

Consider this:

Don't write a general statement like put each plant in a pot.
DO write an exact explanation. Put each 3 inch plant in a 5 inch pot with 2 cups of Scott's top soil.

Don't write:  Water the plants
DO write: Use 4 ounces of water to water each plant in the experimental (independent variable) group.

Don't write:  place a cup on the wet paper towel
DO write:
  1. Use a tablespoon of water to wet the paper towel in the center.
  2. Have someone hold the paper towel without any slack 2 inches above a table
  3. Carefully place a cup weighing 6 ounces on the wet paper towel.
  4. Record what happens
